Granite is a common type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock which is granular and phaneritic in texture. This rock consists mainly of quartz, mica, and feldspar. Occasionally some individual crystals are larger than the groundmass, in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry. Granites can be pink to gray in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. By definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz by volume. Granite is usually found in the continental plates of the Earth’s crust.

The quality of Granite is dependent on the way that the granite is mined or extracted. There are three ways of extracting Granite which create varying levels of quality. Each mine is very different and our belief is that the way we extract our Granite ranks as the best given the quality we look for.

blast extraction

Blast extraction happens when a hole is drilled into the exposed rock surface and a charge is laid with the blast following. From this the miners would select the largest boulders, which are then cut into smaller more manageable granite slabs. Although this method is extremely cheap, the blast doesn’t select the best parts of the granite and during the blast covers the stone with small cracks. These small cracks affect the strength of the granite slabs and therefore, the quality declines.

air bag extraction

Air Bag extraction is similar to Blast extraction, using Air rather than detonation to increase pressure on the rock. In this method, the Air Bag is inserted into the drilled hole and inflated. This method stops the appearance of small cracks. More importantly though it also allows more accurate prediction of where the rock will fracture.

Stone-Cut extraction delivers the highest quality product, yet due to the type of machinery involved can also be the extraction that is highest cost. This method removes the danger of small cracks and is what we believe is the best way of mining Granite for the best quality.
