Diversified junior Walkabout Resources is hoping to complete a prefeasibility study (PFS) on its Takatokwane coal project, in Botswana, by mid-2014.

Last month, the Perth-based company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with technology firm Coalswana to complete an integrated PFS and bankable feasibility study (BFS) for Takatokwane.

The study will not only incorporate an underground mining operation at Takatokwane, but will also look at the possibility of developing a coal-to-liquids (CTL) beneficiation plant at site.

Under the terms of the MoU, Coalswana will fund the integrated studies and the mining licence application, and in return, Walkabout will issue the London-based firm with a five-year convertible note.

Walkabout MD Allan Mulligan told Mining Weekly Online on Wednesday that the agreement with Coalswana not only removed the PFS costs from Walkabout’s accounts, but also de-risked the project and brought a new marketing avenue for the Takatokwane project.

The integrated development would see Walkabout investing between A$40-million and A$60-million to develop an underground mining operation at Takatokwane, capable of supporting the CTL plant being built, and funded, by Coalswana.

The underground mine would also have the capacity to export between 1-million and 1.5-million tonnes a year of coal to South Africa.

“The coal-to-liquids plant uses not only primary product, but also middling product, which we would consider our waste pile of lower quality coal. So developing an initial five-million-tonne-a-year operation could supply both the CTL plant and an export operation,” Mulligan said.

He added that Walkabout was currently contemplating a life-of-mine offtake agreement with Coalswana, and added that the company had not closed the door on potentially owning an equity share in the CTL plant.

Once the integrated PFS had been completed, Coalswana would conduct its own BFS on the proposed CTL plant, while Walkabout’s focus would remain on the underground operation.

“The bankable feasibility studies will be conducted if both developments are found to be viable. And if only one proves viable, then we will focus on that one,” said Mulligan.

In the longer term, the Takatokwane operation could be developed into a multi-mine project delivering some 20-million tonnes of coal a year, and Mulligan said that the major markets for this amount of product would likely be China or India.

The development of the larger scale operation, which would consist of opencast mines, was dependent on the development of a suitable rail line from Botswana to Namibia.

Most of the copper ores mined today are oxide or sulfide ores.From the mines, copper ore is taken to mills, where it is crushed and finely ground in preparation for refining. The method of refining varies with the type of ore.In the case of copper-oxide ores, the copper is usually leached (dissolved) from the ore with a solution of sulfuric acid.

The copper can be recovered from the leaching solution through electrolysis. In this process, a direct electric current is set up between positive and negative electrodes placed in the solution. The negative electrodes, called cathodes, are usually made of thin sheets of pure copper and the positive electrodes, called anodes, are usually made of lead. The electric current causes the copper in the solution to be deposited on the cathodes as a coating of pure copper.Another method is to pass the solution over scrap iron; a chemical reaction causes the copper to be deposited on the iron. The copper is separated from the iron by methods used to refine copper-sulfide ores (many of which also contain iron).

Copper-sulfide ores are first treated by a process called flotation. In this process, bubbles are produced in a mixture of ground copper ore, water, and chemical reagents. The particles of copper-bearing minerals in the ore stick to the bubbles and float to the top of the mixture, where they can be skimmed off.The copper-bearing minerals are roasted to drive off a part of the sulfur. The resulting product is smelted, yielding a molten combination of copper sulfate and iron sulfide called matte. Some light impurities in the matte combine to form slag, which is removed. The matte is then poured into a converter, where air is forced through it to burn out the remaining sulfur and to oxidize the iron. At this stage, most of the remaining impurities, including the oxidized iron, float to the top of the matte to form more slag, which is poured off.

The metallic copper that is left at the bottom of the converter is known as blister copper. It is very pure, but further refining is necessary to remove impurities consisting of small amounts of gold, silver, and other precious metals.This refining is done electrochemically, using a process similar to the one used with oxide ores. For lower-grade deposits located near the surface, the open-pit method is the most practical for the mining of large tonnages of material. Large track-mounted drills prepare the ore for blasting, and the broken ore is hauled to the ore-dressing plant by truck (at up to 150 tons per load) or conveyor. In underground mining, vertical shafts are sunk well over 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) below the surface, and tunnels are extended to the ore body. The ore, broken by drilling and blasting, is hoisted through the shaft and conveyed to the processing plant. In some cases, primary crushing takes place underground; in others, a ramp and trucks carry ore to the surface.
